Garlough Environmental Magnet School
School District 197 and the Dodge Nature Center have partnered to create the Garlough Environmental Magnet School (GEMS) - one of the most dynamic magnet schools ever developed for elementary school students. GEMS, which opened in 2007, serves K-4 students in a rigorous environmental studies program that emphasizes science, technology and math.
GEMS is located directly across the street from Dodge Nature Center's 320 acres of prairies, hardwood forests, lakes, wetlands, miles of hiking trails, plus a working farm, orchard and bee apiary. In addition to these vast natural resources, GEMS students also have access to Dodge's snowshoes, waders, dip nets, specimen collection materials and water-sampling equipment.
The Garlough building has been completely renovated, and coupling the spacious campus with Dodge makes GEMS an incredibly beautiful place to learn. Dodge naturalists work with the dedicated, highly-trained teaching staff in their commitment to helping each child experience the wonders of the natural world within a rigorous, academically challenging curriculum.
The combined resources and staffs of GEMS and Dodge are committed to offering students a world-class education that prepares them for success in school, life and as stewards of the earth. With a curriculum rich in science, technology and math concepts, students gain the skills necessary to understand the systems and interactions they encounter. These subjects and more come to life with hands-on learning that extend the classroom into the school's fresh-air surroundings.
